With the theme of ‘Teaching in 2007’ the Mini-Conference at the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles in Gaspé is launched on March 5 and 6. Teachers are invited to profit from the relatively relaxed atmosphere of Spring Break to broaden their technical knowledge, see their teaching in a new light and share their experiences with others.

Workshops, which are given in English and in French, will relate to two aspects of the strategic plan of the college:

  • Insure professional development of personnel for present and future needs
  • Support and promote technological integration (IT) in instruction and in learning.

Created in response to needs expressed by the teachers themselves, the workshops promise to be both rich and varied. Participants will be able to discuss issues such as class management and get to better know the role of the IT representative. Topics will encompass DECclic II, Powerpoint and Profweb as well. Norm Spatz of the Profweb team will be visiting the cégep to present information about this resource. Participants will also be able to exchange views on problem-based as well as project-based pedagogy. Certain profs will even be able to experience distance learning first-hand as the APOP workshops on electronic portfolios and electronic plagiarism will be given using the VIA teleconferencing platform.

An impressive total of 48 teachers, more than half of teaching staff at Gaspé, have registered for one or more of the workshops given during the pedagogical days. There is a breath of fresh air in Gaspé, and it’s not uniquely coming from the wind-powered turbines!
