Competence, Culture and Citizenship

With 127 presentations in its program, the 2016 edition of the Association québécoise de pédagogie collégiale’s Symposium is once again shaping up to be the event of the year. It will be taking place at the Centre des congrès de Québec from June 8th to 10th, 2016. Educational Information and Communication Technologies will be on the menu to be sure, but the conference will more broadly be treating the theme of Competency, Culture and Citizenship, especially as it relates to digital citizenship.

36th AQPC Annual Symposium

Internationally renowned essayist and novelist John Ralston Saul will be addressing the attendees at the opening plenary with the keynote speech for the 2016 edition of the AQPC Symposium. John Ralston Saul has penned 14 books, including Voltaire’s Bastards: The Dictatorship of Reason in the West and A Métis Civilization. In The Comeback, his most recent essay, he suggests that we reflect on the renaissance of aboriginal cultures in Canada. His presentation will invite us to re-examine the notion of citizenship in light of the influence First Nations have had on who we are.

Other presentations that will surely be highlights of the Symposium:

  • Dominique Morneau, a consultant in organizational psychology, will be presenting a truly original approach to improving professional communication. The presentation will be followed by a workshop with Education Advisors who will discuss ways to draw on this approach.
  • Alan Sears, a professor from the University of New Brunswick and Editor of the journal Citizenship, Teaching and Learning, will present a conference entitled Educating for Culturally Competent Citizenship.
  • A round table discussion on internationalization in higher education will bring together Mouhamed Fadel Niang, the Director of the Institut supérieur d’enseignement professionnel de Thiès from Senegal, Vinciane de Keyser, Secretary General of the Fédération de l’enseignement supérieur catholique de BelgiqueStéphane Lauwick, Vice President of the Association des directeurs d’Instituts universitaires de technologie en France and Bernard Tremblay, the President and Director General from the Fédération des cégeps.
  • Finally, Serge Bouchard, the renowned Anthropologist, Community Leader and Speaker will conclude the Symposium with a reflection on the role of education in the sharing of a common cultural heritage (fonds culturel commun) in diverse societies.

Symposium Tracks to Remember

The index of themes that will be explored during the Symposium includes 17 entries. All of these themes are important, even if we only mention a few examples here.

  • Continuing Education and Recognition of Acquired Competencies: The RCCFC (Réseau des cégeps et des collèges francophones du Canada) is organizing a pre-conference consultation meeting on the topic of Recognition of Acquired Competencies. You can register for this meeting at the same time as you register for the Symposium conference.
  • The pedagogical approaches (approches pédagogiques) will once again be at the heart of the Symposium. There will be many reflections and innovations in line with the integration of ICTs, most notably with the meetings on:
    • Active learning classrooms
    • Techno-pedagogical innovations
    • Flipped classrooms
  • People will certainly notice the presentations on the General Education component of college programs. There will be several activities in line with physical education, language instruction, literature and humanities. There will also be an opportunity to engage in discussions specifically related to the structure and coherence of General Education within the colleges.
  • The conference will also offer several activities on the teaching of health sciences, most notably as part of a meeting on simulation through clinical immersion.
  • Evaluation of learning remains a major preoccupation for teachers in the college network. They will find tools and approaches to help them in class throughout the conference programming selected by the Symposium’s steering committee.
  • In many colleges, the relationship with First Nations will be a crucial element to develop moving forward. The subject will be explored at the Symposium, with workshops and as part of a consultation meeting taking place on June 8th, 2016 in Wendake.
  • Community involvement, education on citizenship, integrating sustainable development into college teaching and digital citizenship will all be discussed during several presentations.

Presentations in English and Simultaneous Translation

Eighteen of the presentations at the Symposium will be conducted in English. A list of these presentations is summarized in the following document.

The AQPC will also be providing a simultaneous translation service from French to English or English to French during the four keynote presentations. Symposium attendees may also have this service for other presentations (to be announced at a future date).

The printed version of the program will be delivered to the colleges at the beginning of April 2016. You can now start preparing your personal schedule and reserve June 8th to 10th in your agenda.
