Toward Learning That Lasts

The AQPC has published a Call for Papers for its 29th symposium which will be held June 3-5 this year in Trois Rivières in collaboration with the Cégep de Trois-Rivièresand Collège Laflèche. The submission deadline is January 16 and the application form is already on-line at the AQPC website.

This is an opportunity to reflect on conditions for learning improvement.

The AQPC established this year’s theme as Toward Learning That Lasts. This is an opportunity to reflect on conditions for learning improvement. All teachers would like to believe that the programs and coursesthat they prepare integrate well with each other to create solid and permanent student learning. Unfortunately, we have to admit that all learning is not equally long-lasting.

In certain cases, students are content to simply parrot course content to pass tests. In other cases, they work effectively to master material that they perceive as important. What factors contribute to student perception of value in their own learning?

Information technology can promote this commitment to in-depth learning. What are the most effective products and services to make this possible?

What kind of contribution can we expect from student services personnel, pedagogical advisors or guidance counsellors in furthering the acquisition of deep learning?

The symposium’s Steering Committee welcomes proposals from anyone interested in sharing their experiences and thoughts on factors that foster deep learning, better program design, the development of pedagogical methods and educational materials as well as the adaptation of institutions, specifically through the development of learning-oriented technological tools.

Information technology can promote this commitment to in-depth learning.

IT Contributes Towards An Ecologically Responsible Symposium

Following last year’s initiative, the AQPC has continued to modify its symposium to be more ecologically responsible. Rather than use paper, texts in electronic format will be available during the presentations. Furthermore, an electronic portfolio will replace the usual convention kit bags.

A Bilingual Symposium

The AQPC has made a commitment to encouraging Anglophone participation at the symposium. This year a keynote speech will be presented in English by Christopher Knapper of Queen’s University, first recipient of the “Christopher Knapper Lifetime Achievement Award” created in his name by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Last year, each time period had at least one presentation in English and sometimes more. The program for these events was available in English as well. This year has gotten off to a truly magnificent start in this respect with a Call for Papers,application form and website that are extremely inviting for Anglophone participants.

Bursaries for International Distribution

Once again this year, in cooperation with MELS, five bursaries will be given to presenters at the symposium who are members of the Quebec college network to allow wider distribution of their work at an international symposium or colloquium with higher education as a theme.

The Idea Fair

The symposium includes a new form of intervention called the Idea Fair, which consists of round table discussions that last about 30 minutes in a rather informal setting. All those interested in participating in this less formal exchange with their colleagues or in presenting their work, an activity or a pedagogical achievement, are invited to submit their projects by completing the short form included for this purpose on our Web site.

Les Rendez-vous de l’AQPC

The symposium will also host several ‘rendez-vous’ including graduates of PERFORMA programs, pedagogical advisors, CAPRES (Consortium d’animation sur la persévérance et la réussite en enseignement supérieur), and the Carrefour de la réussite. These activities will be held in French.
