Safeguarding Learners’ Data

This lab is a continuation of activities started in Eductive’s French edition.

In Quebec’s college network as anywhere else around the world, cyberattacks abound. They occur at any time of the day or night. A tiny proportion of those attacks succeed in infiltrating our IT systems, wreaking havoc when they do. Data loss, inability to access work tools, breach of confidential information…It might be difficult to measure the impact of such catastrophes before experiencing them.

During the winter of 2021, Eductive launched a lab on cybersecurity focused on safeguarding learners’ data as well as other information used in learning contexts. This lab ties in with work done by other Collecto teams. It includes testimonials from people who had to deal with serious issues caused by cyberattacks.

All learning pros are welcomed in this lab (teachers, ped counsellors, librarians, academic advisors, etc.). Their responsibilities towards learners’ data are often misunderstood. Eventually, this lab will also involve IT staff who work with data for pedagogical purposes.

Objectives

  • Lay the groundwork for a cybersafe culture in Quebec’s college network
  • Stimulate interactions about experiences, best practices, and concerns about the use of digital data in learning
  • Provoke thoughtful discussions around the impact of cyberattacks as well as shared responsibilities among multiple stakeholders when it comes to safeguarding learners’ data
